I Wish I'd Said That (or at least written it)

I was looking online for a review of the opera that I'll be seeing tomorrow (Tosca) and came across this in the Boston Globe. The wording and visual it conjured made me happy all day.
...she had little sense of the fluidity of Puccini's phrasing, and her stage presence was tentative and awkward. Gestures and movement came a split-second late, oddly out of sync with the music and the drama: the physical version of a poorly dubbed film.
Edit: Friday, February 1.

I am no longer amused and for at least the next several hours, I will be referring to tonight's performance of Tosca as 'that stupid opera' . The city's fairly paralyzed by a snowstorm that's been raging for hours. We were even allowed to leave work at 1:30 pm.

I called the opera company and was told 'oh no, we never cancel a performance so hope you make it tonight!'. I was also told that it's too late to exchange tickets for another performance.

I hope we're the only ones there and at least get to go out drinking with the cast after so I can tell them in person what I got or didn't from their performances.

Sounds a bit like a pre-written review waiting for the right opera. I'm having an opera weekend as well - Barber of Seville - if I can escape the TO snow - just a short delay at Pearson would be greatly welcomed.

Enjoy the show!

Well, at least it wasn't a review about your surgeon.

I am still pissed that I had the opportunity to see Pavoratti in Piagliacci and the fat bastard sent his understudy out at the last minute. What a gyp!

Wow, what a review! But I think they borrowed it from my doctors use of his finger during my latest prostrate exam...

I'm eager to see the Barber of Seville later this season Wapentake, hope you enjoy and that you beat the snow, it's nasty out there today!

That's exactly why I only do home surgery on myself Suze.

Is that why you killed him Evil Evil Genius? Remind me to stay on your good evil side.

I hope they at least let you keep the video footage Skyler's Dad, you could probably make some cash on that!

Cheers for drinking with opera singers! I hope that worked out for ya.

Barry Manilow finally canceled on a day of one-inch snow; hope the opera treated you like Mandy.

I love the "poorly dubbed film" analogy. I think because that's how I walk around every day ...

Won't it be awkward that the performers can hear all of your smart-ass remarks to one another if you're the only ones there?

Especially at the afterparty?

Have a drink and an aria for me. And don't fall in a snowbank drunk on the way home. I hate it when that happens.

My kids were a little angry that the school show went on today as well.

Ah, snow will never stop you Cannucks. Did I spell "cannuks" right?

I really want to hear about your evening. Getting drunk with the cast sounds good to me! Better than the play, apparently.

i read somewhere they are doing an opera about Britney Spears.

I take it that the same company that performed in Boston is putting it on in your town. Either that, or the Boston Globe is really stretching their arts section budget a bit thin.

The review reminds me of one of those old kung-fu movies from the 1970s. Hopefully, one of the performers gestures will be a roundhouse kick.

I hope the mayor at least sent in the army to deal with the snow clearing. Oh wait, you're in Toronto, of course he did.

Sing along at the top of your lungs, Dale!

I liked Tosca when I saw it at the Met so I'm interested to hear your verdict.

I just found out there will be a performance of La Boheme at the high school sometime soon by the cast from the Large Metropolitan Area a few hours away. I am absolutely shocked and wonder if they allow chewin' tobaccy in the High School theater to watch dat fat lady sing.

The drinking was confined to pre-show at dinner unfortunately Andi and that may well have been best for everyone.

I came and they gave but with taking from me Beth so I'll blame Barry for this one. Sometimes, I'm in that same film myself. Should we co-star?

It would have been particularly uncomfortable Mob because at least one of the performers would have first poured a drink on me, I would have laughed and then she would have punched me in the face repeatedly.

It was fairly smashing Mellowlee so my complaints will be limited this time.

Falling in a snowbank is never as dramatic as sliding on ice, legs and arms everywhere Bubs. Luckily, I avoided both.

About half the kids were off already on a regularly scheduled P.A. day Tenacious S. so they were none too pleased that many of the schools were closed wasting a perfectly good snow day.

That must be the Ammerriccann spelling CP.

It might have been more fun Leonesse, I could have had them do selections and leave out the tedious and repetitious parts.

It'd play well I'm sure Distributor Cap, it's got everything - madness, betrayal, high drama, scenes with costumes, some without.

A roundhouse kick would have added a decidedly different tone to things X. Dell. There were some problems with the actress playing Tosca so it may well have been the same production. The review here said that she looked like she was acting in a silent film, a statement I have to agree with.

We'll never live that one down Barbara and with good reason. I'm from the east coast so it was pretty laughable. Mel, you big knob.

I liked it too Chelene, most of it was quite well performed but I think your production may have had an edge ours was missing.

Take your tobacco and play it by ear (depending on the singing, chew and spit) Leonesse.

This has nothing to do with opera, because I'm not nearly cultured enough to comment on that subject, but I wanted to tell you about something I just read in Time Out New York. Apparently, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld got the idea for "Seinfeld" while in a BAGEL SHOP. I think you're sitting on a gold mine, pal. And I give you full permission to write a sassy, gal-pal bloger character based on me.

BeckEye said...

Ok, I don't know what a bloger is. Make that character a blogger.

Dale said...

I'm not cultured enough to comment on it either Beckeye but I refuse to let that stop me. A bagel shop eh? I'm writing you in at once!
