These Are The People In My Neighborhood

This entertaining music quiz is brought to you by the letters Splotchy and Bubs and by the number of people voting for Sanjaya.

What was the first recorded music you bought?

I believe it may have been Shannon.mp3 by Henry Gross on 45 rpm. I think the song is about a dead dog. Nothing says cheery childhood like harmonizing with a guy named Gross about a dead dog.

What was the last music you bought?

Wincing The Night Away by The Shins. I dare you to get the song Australia.m4p out of your head. I recall a bit of hoopla when they were on the Garden State soundtrack and then was recently reminded of them at Tongue Tied Lightning. Soon after, they were popping up everywhere and I was powerless to resist.

What was the first "professional" music show you ever went to?

I believe it was to see April Wine way back in my early teen days. Oowatanite.mp3

What was the last?

I think it may have been Bjork or Garbage but I can't say for sure because now I'm old. Either way, try one of these on. ArmyofMe.mp3 or Cherry Lips Go Baby Go.m4a

What's your "desert island" album?

This answer could change from moment to moment but right this second, I'd go with David Sylvian's Secrets of the Beehive. Here's why: Orpheus.m4a

What's your favorite album/song title? (the *title* , not the actual album or song).

Without much in depth thought, I'll say Short Sharp Shocked by Michelle Shocked for album title and 5 & 1/2 Minute Hallway by Poe for song title.

What's your favourite album art (include an image of it if you can)?

Most of the Talking Heads covers were pretty damned cool but for now, I'll go for the cheap visual joke (how unlike me!): I bet Julie was really happy they didn't call this around six.

Ideal choice for a karaoke song?

Group: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Solo (and if I could sing): Blame It On The Sun.mp3 by Emiliana Torrini.

Song you don't like that WILL NOT LEAVE YOUR HEAD if you hear it.

I start out liking it and laughing but eventually after hearing Sunshine Day on a loop in my head, I'd kill The whole Brady Bunch for a nickel.

Which is cooler? -- Vinyl? CD? Cassette? 8-track?

Although I'd go with vinyl overall, could there be anything dorkier and more fun than rocking out to KISS Alive on 8-track? I did it. Ah, the horrible fade-outs mid-song, the chunky click to the next track and then the fade back in? Classically fucked up!

I have to say you have great taste. The Shins are great and I totally love the Talking Heads albumn cover!

Done! And I do believe in record time. Is there a prize? There's a prize, isn't there.

My karaoke dream song has always been "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks. Of course, I would have to find a Loggins-esque man to sing it with. And there really aren't many men like Kenny in the world.

Solo: Blame It On The Sun

I think you meant:
Blame It On The Rain.

;)

That reminds me, I should be doing mine too CP. I've had lots of time and so far, I've only lost one document I need. I blame the Brits.

Hey Molecular Turtle. I do indeed have great taste.

Good answers Berry. I like how easily you are fooled into doing things.

I bet Kenny would do it if you called him Beckeye.

Now you're doing the weather too Tanya? You really are some kind of wonderful.

Yay The Shins!

As far as Talking Heads album covers goes, I was always partial to Fear of Music, though it would be hard to visually convey the texture of my vinyl copy.

Also, love the starkness of Talking Heads '77. I imagine it would have been pretty damned striking to pick it up when it first came out in the record stores.

I've always loved Julie London. I'm betting she's glad the album wasn't called 10:10.

I have you beat on the 8-track: I had a Jefferson Starship album I played/clunked/played over and over. Ah, the 1970s ...

Damn, I realized after I started listening that I know that Shannon song. It's about his dog? I always figured it was about his sister or something and could never figure out why they would dump her body in the ocean. Although why they would dump his dog's body in the ocean is also beyond me.

hahaha April Wine played at my high school dance! Oowatanite that was.

I once drove from Columbia, SC to Washington, DC to see David Sylvian live. If he is worth that trip, then he is certainly worthy of desert island album. The show did not disappoint either. His voice is like butta!!!!!

I LOVE that Julie London cover. Well done!

Thank you for planting "Shannon" in my head. It took me about 10 years to get it out the first time.

Interesting,
the first 45 I ever bought was a novelty song of some kind, something like "They're Coming to Take Me Away" or "Hey There Little Red Riding Hood"....
perhpas that was the moment that marked me as a future blogger.

I got that Shins record this weekend. I will take you up on that dare.

Have you ever read "House Of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski? Ignore me if you already know this, but he's Poe's brother! That album and the book go hand in hand. I was obsessed for a while. :) Good stuff.

Interesting tag meme. You're not serious about us doing this, are you?

Awesome music Dale. I really like the Emiliana Torrini song!

Hey Splotchy, nice picks for the covers. And yes - yay for the Shins!

Julie's something else, I loved her on EMERGENCY as the nurse who looked like a bourbon and a smoke were just out of camera range Beth. She made an okay run of the lounge circuit too it seems. I get the feeling she knew night time was the right time.

Barbara, I think it's about a dog but I'm trying not to think too hard about any of it for fear that April Wine and the dog will end up in my dreams with that ding ding ding ding ding ding ding opening to the song.

I missed a chance years ago to see David in concert Tenacious S and I'm still a bit annoyed at myself. His voice is buttery but with the salt still in.

Glad I could help and hurt at the same time Bubs. It's a gift no?

My sister had a yellow 78 novelty record I recall CL called I think 'Dungaree Doll' which always freaked me out. I think the flipside was 'My Friend The Ghost'. I should look them up and see if it had anything to do with this current compulsion to write.

It's on Grant Miller.

Obsession, very familiar in this context Hapabukbuk. I loved Poe's album and sang along until one day, I thought, what the fuck is she singing about anyway? I then read the book and loved it. Gimmicky at times but very satisfying just the same. And the cd still just sounds excellent.

X. Dell, I'm never serious about you and memes.

She's a favourite Mel. Emiliana's Love in the Time of Science album is cool, alternative and loudish while her Fisherman's Wife album is more contemplative and quiet. For a young lass, she's already had an interesting and varied singing career. Glad you're liking it.

Since you're probably still jetlagged and can't think of a great post at the moment ... I just TAGGED you. Yeah, I'm thoughtful that way.

I think I'll go for a walk outside now. The summer sun's calling my name! (I remembered these lyrics without help. Shame on me!)

I love it when Bobby does that soulful refrain. God bless the music of the Brady Bunch!

I'll see you tag and then do it Beth!

And God bless you Chris for giving me hope that there'll always be someone who can cause a blinding rage in me with only a few simple words. Argh!
