2. Only You - Portishead
3. Cellphone's Dead - Beck
4. The Weight - The Band
5. Honey Molasses - Jill Scott
6. Pilgrimage - R.E.M.
7. Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed
8. Eye of Fatima (Pt. 1) - Camper Van Beethoven
9. El Tango de Roxanne - Moulin Rouge Stdtrk
10.Haoulou - Cheb Mami

This Friday Random Ten is a multitasking son of a gun. Not only is it magically delicious but it may make me seem cooler than I actually am. It also gives me the strength to answer a question Tenacious S put to me a little while ago in the comments section of this post.

Every time a list like this presents itself, I report proudly on it and feel safe in the knowledge that my credibility is intact. Dear readers, it is time for me to admit that for every Archer Prewitt, XTC or Etta James tune there is propping me up, there's a *gasp* Olivia Newton John, Sade or Jim Reeves song threatening its way into the mix. Wash me clean oh Lord. For penance, I am listening to Sunshine Day by The Brady Bunch 10 times.

Ah music, it does so many things doesn't it? Lifts you up, punctuates a moment like nothing else, makes you laugh, cry and move. I love you, I honestly love you.

I admit too,

I've got albums by
ONJ
Jim Reeves
Sade

We all make mistakes in life.

Actually I'll be honest, none of those artists are THAT bad IMO.

There should be no shame in preference of music. Music is the finger that touches our soul.

I love Sade! I can't get enough of the yummy groove on King of Sorrow.

I had a jarring experience the other day while shuffling: I went very suddenly from Acoustic Alchemy to Billy Talent... just like that. I'm still recovering.

That is a damn fine Random Ten you have there, and you know what? There's plenty enough room in the world for both Olivia N-J & the divine Marianne. I spent a significant portion of my driving time yesterday listening to Shirley Bassey and The Carpenters, therefore I know whereof I speak.

Ballad of Lucy Jordan - I would love to hear that right now!

We all have skeletons in our playlist closets. Embracing our less-than-indie moments is what makes us human.

Okay, not only is this list perfect, but the admission that you are not a stone cold alternageek makes you even cooler.

But the fact that you'd listen to Sunshine Day as penance is worrying. I'd consider that a treat.

Grant-- the Marianne Faithful song is from the Lost in the Stars collection, isn't it? Do you have that on cd? It's very, very rare and difficult to find. I have it on vinyl. Lou Reed's version of "September Song" on that record is a favorite.

Love Camper Van Beethoven! My late friend Mark saw them one night and told they finished their show with back to back covers of the Captain and Tenille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Had the dvd of the Band's Last Waltz. It occurred to me that the show was American Thanksgiving Day 30 years ago-- I looked it up-- tomorrow, Nov. 25 is the exact anniversary.

Ah, El Tango de Roxanne...if I ever heard a song that made jealousy seem remotely glamorous, that was it. That's some coincidence, too, with your last post! I have a theory: do you have an iPod? My theory is that the Shuffle Songs function on the iPod isn't entirely random, but is somehow pre-programmed to make songs/artists you've been listening to recently, or have rated high, appear more often. Also, the number of times I get back-to-back versions of the same song (I tend to like to have as many live versions of favourite songs as possible) seems uncannily large. Anybody with me on this?

I thought you were brilliant Ben but now I think you're an Evelyn Champagne King Supernova!

You put your finger on it Old Lady. Very nice.

Sometimes those moments jar you for days, usually they make me laugh Berry. Sade has the slow groove thing wrapped up on that whole cd.

Shirley Bassey & Propellerheads came up in the mix a few songs after my random ten Eric so although it's a small shuffling world, there's still that wiggle room.

Why you're a whole new you Barbara. I embrace my diversity and insanity all the time but I refuse to admit that I am human!

It would be a treat once or twice Melinda June but ten times? Could you really take that? You're sweet to call me anything but the goofball that I am.

Here comes Johnny Yen again and apparently he's drunk again! Or did I change my name to Grant and forget? Haha. One thing I did actually forget was how long it's been since I heard ...Lucy Jordan. It's just the mp3 that I have.

I particularly like that CvanB song and had that album and I think the one after although they've since been lost, sold or abandoned somehow. That's a hilarious closer for a show.

And I just saw The Last Waltz in its entirety for the first time in July.

Hmm, you might be on to something Geeti D. I don't rate my songs so that's not a factor in my playback experience but it does seem that some songs seem to come over and over while others languish.

The summer sun's calling my name...

I knew you'd know Slaygirl. You're great that way.

Haoulou is amazing and you're amazing for listening to it. Have you heard his Delali album? It's heaven.

Anonymous, I've been fingered by music many times. My soul has been bruised by that finger. And I mean bruised good.

N.V. - I really only know Cheb because of reading about him on one of your blog posts and I love the Delali songs that I have. Groovy fingering.

Thanks and you're very welcome Bubs.

I do indeed Katie and their Roseland dvd is a favourite as well. Wish I'd been there for that.

Thank God, Dale. You are human after all. I was getting worried. See, the great thing about being a little older, I've decided, is that I can occasionally listen to crap and pretend to not care about my street cred. Either that, or I can pass the crap off as some sort of beautiful moment of nostalgia. Whatever the case, it's good to know ONJ is getting physical with you.

I knew you'd know it all Coaster Punchman. Or at least knew someday you'd figure out cut and paste. :-)

Tenacious S - I wanted to put your mind to ease. Although I don't care much what people think about what I'm listening to, I sometimes have a defensive answer ready as I near the elevators at work -- What are you listening to? Um, Nick Cave. It just sounds cooler than Gary Wright.
