Have You Never Been Fallow?

My adventures as a citizen of the world have been continuing as usual but I've been far too busy not writing them down to write them down.

Why just the other day, I received a compliment of the highest order and from a management type no less!

The exchange went something like this:

MT: How are things going?
Me: Pretty good.

MT: Everything’s alright with the job?
Me: Yep.

MT: You’re happy with all the changes to the job?
Me: Yes, I’m reasonably content.

MT: That’s good. You know, you don’t seem to complain much or have a lot of questions about how to do your job. You seem pretty competent.

Me: Is that going to be a problem?

Aaaaaand...scene.

If you were exposed to some of my colleagues, you’d understand immediately that the word competent is high praise indeed. Who knows what heights I'll hit now that I have that under my belt?

They've set the bar pretty high eh? The sky's the limit now!

Is this what passes for excellence in Canada? I keed, I keed...

I've always found competency to be a big problem. You're going to need to work on that, Dale.

Hey Dilbert! Happy to see you blogging again.

This is what will pass for the next performance review I suppose...

(Dale's Company), where mediocrity is excellence!

Yes! I'm thinking the CEO's probably dusting off his desk and packing his silver swinging balls and photo of his ex wife into an old cardboard box right about now! Excellent!

I yell at you, and you post. That's what I like to see. You're quite a competent blogger.

Competent. Oh Dale, that must make you feel kind of tingly!

Oh, Dale, I have missed you so much. You are oh so very competent. I hope this somehow helps your social stature.

Isn't the old saying that everyone rises to the level of their incompetence? So clearly you're going to be promoted.

I love that about being a professional instead of an academic. Suddenly excellence, instead of making new contributions to your field or blowing a bunch of people's minds, is measured by doing things competently without complaining much. It's like summer break all year long.

Competency is quite underrated. Congratulations.

I would settle for competent among some of my co-workers.

when it comes to blogging, you're pretty competent too.

I've always considered you pretty competent.

Les Becker said...

No fair! *I* want to be competent, too!

It's very obvious to me now... competent is the new black.

Now that's you've been branded as competent, you are never going to have any peace. How you gonna nap in your cubicle now, Mr Competent?

I can see you now lording it over your colleagues who are "almost adequate."

Gifted Typist said...

be careful Dale, when they come to you and say things like competent, you will end up with more work and responsibility and probably headaches, stay away from the competent word.

Your blogging has been ....cough...cough...pretty competent also. Slacker!

I can just barely make out the bar God.

You wouldn't believe the levels of mediocrity we surround ourselves with Elizabeth. I keed, sort of.

I feel terrible when I reach these sorts of heights Some Guy, I will cease at once!

Likening me to Dilbert is not likely to find me more willing to blog Melly!

I'm hoping my review is at least as good Skyler's Dad.

If only we aspired to such lofty goals Cormac.

He is Vegetable Assassin, I know because I brought him the box and am the reason she's an ex-wife.

An obedient man Beckeye, all I need is some gentle shouting from time to time.

Tingly and special Fran.

It probably won't do much for my stature Tenacious S. I feel like now I should slouch to let the incompetents feel taller.

I've been promoting myself all along Wendy B, so why not?!

Now that the ceiling's so low Mistress La Spliffe, I'm not sure how to proceed. Back to school maybe?

I know you are but what am I Coaster Punchman?

We all settle now and then Johnny, it's what must be done.

Thank you Holly. And I'm a good spellr.

High praise Grant Miller, as always, you are to be adored for your wisdom at least.

Slow down you move too fast Les!

It's as clear as black and white Fran.

Napping takes place under the desk out of sight Barbara.

I do X. Dell, they just don't know it.

I'm pacing myself for that very reason Gifted Typist.

So slack I know Suze, for shame. I'll try to be more competent.

When you're used to incompetence, what Dale has is a gift.
